Proposal 5:

Equity Training

Plan and implement professional development for all staff and faculty on implicit bias, racial equity, proper responses to student racism, and inclusive curriculum.

Why is equity programming important?

TEACHERS SHOULD BE TRAINED TO DEAL WITH THE INCREASE IN HATE CRIMES

  • More than one-third of the teachers surveyed said they had noticed a rise in anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment among their students for the past 4 years, and a full two-thirds reported that their students—mainly Muslims, immigrants and children of immigrants, African Americans, and other students of color—were worried about what could happen to them and their families

INCREASING DIVERSITY IN CAMPUS CALLS FOR TRAINING FOR TEACHERS TO HAVE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EMPHASIS ON DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

  • “In 2014, U.S. public schools hit a minority-majority milestone with Latino, African-American, and Asian students having surpassed the number of white students. In 2044, the U.S. Census predicts that over half of the nation’s population will be people of color, so this trend will likely continue

  1. While this increase in diversity at the student level is commendable, the completion rates among different racial and ethnic groups differ by as much as 20 percentage points, with African American males lagging behind all groups compared (Shapiro et al., 2017; Fig. 2).” therefore the education system and staff need proper training to increase the completion rates.

HOW TO APPROACH TRAINING WITH A DEVELOPMENTAL MINDSET

  • “Being anti-racist isn't a fixed trait. Rather, it's built through deliberate, repeated effort over time. With this mindset, discovering we're biased is not a character indictment. In fact, educators with a growth mindset seek out feedback about potential biases, knowing it will lead to improved practice—and ultimately more positive outcomes for learners” (Anti Racist Educator)

MORE PROFITABLE AND ECONOMICALLY

  • Employee turnover resulting from unconscious bias is an expensive mistake. CareerBuilder estimates that turnover costs companies 22,000 per employee. That's no small number. ... On the other hand, making your employees aware of unconscious bias through training and development costs a fraction of that at only 1,200 per employee. So, why not attempt to re engage employees through training? It's far less expensive and better for the morale of the workforce” Stacey A. Gordon, MBA Founder and CEO of Rework Work
